The Bass Club holds three special events each year for young Double Bass players, in: May, a Bass Day August, the Summer School December, the Christmas Basses The next event is the: Summer School: 17th - 23rd August 2008
Christmas Basses Every year this is held the week before Christmas at the ‘Yorke Trust Creake Centre’ in North Norfolk. Space is limited and the preference goes to bassists who attend the Summer Course. There are usually 15 places and the courses are geared towards technique, chamber music or classes with specific projects. The last two years the advanced group have had an intensive orchestral repertoire session with Dave Fletcher the Principal Bass of the Liverpool Philharmonic and now a freelance player in London. Bass Day 2008 was in May Lord Menuhin was passionate about the development of string playing and string teaching and the Double Bass is an instrument that needs special support for its players develop. Bassists were only added to the school in 1991 and there is now a thriving class of five players, from England, Spain, Sweden and South Africa. The Yehudi Menuhin school's bass teacher, Caroline Emery, will be joined by the American player Paul Ellison, Professor of Double Bass at Rice University in Houston and is also the Pedagogical adviser to the Colburn School In Los Angeles, California. Paul visits England annually and his classes are always inspirational for students and teachers alike. As well as teaching at the Menuhin school, Caroline Emery is a Professor at the Royal College of Music and senior tutor at the RCM Junior Department. Caroline was the first teacher of the Yorke Mini Bass Project and is author of the 'Bass is Best' series of books. This is a rare opportunity for pupils and teachers to take part in lessons and discussions of two distinguished bass teachers. Players of all standards are welcome.
