22 - 28 August 2010 at Wellington College The Bass Club was delighted to hold its 2010 annual Summer School once again at Wellington College, a prestigious public school set in spacious grounds in Berkshire, within easy reach of the motorway and rail networks and the main London airports. We were also delighted to welcome a new international guest tutor, Ali Yazdanfar, who was present throughout the week and worked with all the groups of students. The Bass Club's musical staff are all experienced, specialist bass teachers. There will be a full programme of free time activities supervised by a social team, and a medical adviser will be in attendance. All meals will be provided, and special diets can be catered for. If you are at all unsure which course to apply for at the 2010 Summer School please telephone Caroline Emery on +44 (0)20 8330 3188. The principal tutors in 2010 will be: Caroline Emery (Course Director and Director of the Bass Club), Professor at the Royal College of Music and Yehudi Menuhin School and author of Bass is Best. Jan Alm, Assistant Principal Bass with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and professor at Gothenburg University. Other news ... BASS 2010 will take place 5th - 10th October 2010 in Berlin in the Universität der Künste (Berlin University of the Arts) and the Musikhochschule Hanns Eisler (Hanns Eisler music academy). The one-week BASS 2010 festival is characterised by a broad range of styles - from old music to jazz . There will be numerous performances by soloist players and reknowned double bass ensembles. There will also be many exhibitors of instruments, strings and bows. BASS 2010 also caters for young double bass players, from six years old. There will be a special Minibass-Competition and also ‘play along’ concerts, lessons and group projects in which everyone can join in. Playing music together and having fun playing the double bass are central to all these activities.

Every year this is held the week before Christmas at the ‘Yorke Trust Creake Centre’ in North Norfolk. Space is limited and the preference goes to bassists who attend the Summer Course. There are usually 15 places and the courses are geared towards technique, chamber music or classes with specific projects. The last two years the advanced group have had an intensive orchestral repertoire session with Dave Fletcher the Principal Bass of the Liverpool Philharmonic and now a freelance player in London.
